American Fencing Academy of Dayton

American Fencing Academy of Dayton

The American Fencing Academy of Dayton (AFAD Inc.) is an organization dedicated to promoting the sport of fencing in the Dayton area, making it available (as well as affordable) to all who are interested in learning the art of fencing. AFAD was founded by Ray Bautista, who started the club by the order of his own fencing master's dying wish. Ray brought new life to fencing in Southwest Ohio through his charisma, generosity, and natural fencing talent. In the first few years, he made AFAD the home of an honorable and fun-loving team of students who quickly rose to champion level fencers. His untimely death in 2004 has not diminished his dream for the Dayton area. His students, to this day, continue his original teachings of fencing, charity, and love of life.

AFAD welcomes (and contains) fencers of all skill levels. During open fencing, there are fencers ranging from A-rated to unrated. All fencers (regardless of rating) share a common drive for self-improvement, development of character, and love of fencing. New students of AFAD have the opportunity to seek private instruction necessary for high-level competitions. Members of AFAD are encouraged to attend tournaments regularly; some attend tournaments all over Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and Michigan on a monthly basis. Fencing under the name of AFAD carries a high sense of comradery among team-members, and respect from neighboring clubs in other cities. AFAD's proud reputation, however, also depends on the volunteers of the board members and instructors who help organise tournaments, teach classes, and perform other miscellaneous duties (e.g. creating this website).
