My sword is my courage, my shield is faith, and my armor is determination!
AFAD recommends that students interested in additional fencing activities explore the following opportunities:
Repeat Beginning Fencing – A solid grounding in fundamental techniques is the foundation of all further fencing skills. Most students can benefit from repeating the Beginning Fencing class at least once.
Intermediate Fencing Classes – For those that have completed Beginning Fencing, AFAD offers Intermediate Fencing classes at Kettering Rec Center. Call 296-2587 for schedule and cost information.
Intro to Competitive Fencing – AFAD has added a new class at Washington Twp Recreation Center. This class will introduce students to electrically-scored fencing (used in most fencing tournaments), and will focus heavily on actual bouting skills. Limited class size, ages from 6 grade and up (or permission from instructor).
Open Fencing with AFAD – Sundays, 2:00-5:00 at Kettering Recreation Complex. Open to fencers of all levels of experience. $3.00 drop-in fee, loaner equipment available.
Attend Summer Camp (Kettering Rec. Complex) – One-week, intensive fencing instruction. Two Sessions according to experience level. Held every summer. Call Kettering Rec Center (296-2587) for costs and additional information.
Try out for the AFAD Competition Team – Students with an interest in fencing competitively are encouraged to try out for the AFAD Competition Team . Tryouts are held in August and January of each year. Tryout times and locations will be posted here on the AFAD website.
Participate in Novice Tournaments – Novice Tournaments provide an excellent way for new fencers to experience the tournament environment. Novice Tournaments held throug! hout the year; check the AFAD website for announcements. We are now beginning to host USFA rated tournaments too. Loaner equipment for new fencers is available at these events.
Private Lessons – To advance beyond the basics of fencing, individual instruction is essential. Students seriously interested in improving their fencing skills should consider private lessons. However, to make private lessons worthwhile, considerable dedication is required. Private students are expected to practice frequently, compete regularly in local tournaments, and participate in AFAD club activities.
